      When I began wholesaling my miniatures in 1974, it became quickly obvious that the standard model for retail / wholesale pricing of manufactured products did not fit the realities of hand-crafted miniatures - a realm somewhere between one-of-a-kind craftwork and limited edition reproductions. To simply halve the selling price of a piece of work in order to sell it created two problems: the profit would be reduced by more than 50% (since costs remain constant), but the demand would increase proportionally, perhaps to a level that would tax my ability to meet the needs of my valued dealers.

       Fortunately, much of my work lent itself to being reproduced by various techniques which, while preserving the quality and appearance of each piece, allowed them to be produced more quickly and economically in small groups rather than one at a time. So, I was able to lower my selling prices for items purchased in quantities that would allow me to realize the economy of reproduction. Over the years I have developed a solid group of handmade miniatures which I feel comfortable selling at a discount to dealers able to meet a minimum quantity order.

       In addition, I keep a production schedule which (except for holidays and travel periods and those times when I inadvertently get behind) allows most orders to be shipped within a reasonable timeframe for handmade items.

       So, to summarize: reasonable discounts for miniatures ordered in reasonable quantities, delivered in a reasonable time. These factors, along with my close attention to the needs of individual dealers, make it possible to maintain a business relationship that will be satisfactory to us both.
